CREDET TO THE EDET

This Beatportal interview with dance music pioneer Greg Wilson is pretty great:
You are a figure associated with vinyl purism and also re-edits, so what do you think of the idea of disco downloads? With nu-disco being driven by digital as well as by vinyl?

I wouldn’t say I was a vinyl purist.  It’s not so much about the format for me, but the quality of the music played, whether this is via turntables, CDJs or laptop.

We can never go back to how things were, nor should we want to - I don’t like nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake, although it’s important to learn from the past if you really want to approach the future from a position of true understanding.

I’m excited about the way things are nowadays, it’s a very open time for music.  People consume music much differently to the way they did when I was younger, but that’s OK as far as I’m concerned.  Things can’t remain static - the moment people start wishing themselves back to the old days is the moment they start to grow old.

It’s not enough to just respect that past, you must also respect the future and the people who are shaping it.

CUT COPY, THE PRESETS, KORDAN, ME

Pre+tour

Cut Copy and the Presets, both on Australia's hottest record label Modular, are two of the biggest electronic/dance acts in the world right now, and two of my favorites. The Presets have hit their stride with the muscular electro pop anthems on their second album, Apocalypso, and having seen them five times, I can guarantee they put on an amazing show. Cut Copy have probably made the album of the year, In Ghost Colours, thanks to producer Tim Goldworthy (from DFA). Each could easily headline this show on their own, but they've teamed up for one of the best tour line-ups in recent memory.

The tour hits the Fineline tomorrow, with Kordan from NYC opening the show.  I'll be keeping the party going and spinning in between bands.  Another don't-miss show.

THERE'S GOTTA BE A BETTER WAY

I watched the Michael Phelps SNL premiere last night. It was really funny. The fake ad was the best part.

TML INTO OBLIVION

Tomorrow is a Very Big Deal. The Juan Maclean are touring behind their new forthcoming album, and it is fucking amazing - full of classic disco, house, and techno references, while aimed straight into the future. It is some of the best stuff to come out on DFA, period. The band line-up this time around features Juan Maclean, Nancy (LCD Soundsystem), Nick (Holy Ghost!), and Jerry (!!!, Turing Machine), and is stopping at the 7th Street Entry for a show Saturday night.

After the show, there's free crossover into the mainroom for the back-to-school edition of Too Much Love, which should be off the hook. I will be playing alongside the incomparable Naughty Wood, with Juan and Nick coming by after the show to spin records. Absolutely not to be missed!

LIQUIFIED

  • Liquid Liquid are reformed and getting the remix treatment for a 2x12" with remixes from Optimo, The Loving Hand, Matthew Dear and DJ Sample. And yes, Optimo remixes "Optimo." MIND EXPLOSION! Also, Tim Goldsworthy aka The Loving Hand has been releasing a slew of remixes lately, including tracks for Lykke Li and Prints. It's all extremely solid work (duh) but I hope this Liquid Liquid track really takes it to the next level, like some real head-busting shite.

  • Foals are getting remixed by two of my favs, Ewan Pearson and DiskJokke, as well as Supermayer, who always bring a lot of hype but who I can never really get into.

  • If you didn't read it in the PDF, FADER have posted their recent DFA feature online. [photo above] Must must read, obvs.

  • Speaking of FADER and DFA, you can stream the new Holy Ghost! remix of They Came From The Stars I Saw Them. I dig the TCFTSIST album but I've only given it a cursory listen. It was released by the venerable Thisisnotanexit records. Wow, the nomenclature in this paragraph is killing my brain.

    DOWNTOWN FIGHT ACADEMY

    Wrestlers

I think Alexis vs. James is all I've ever wanted from a music video.

    MACHINES DON'T CARE

  • Nick Catchdubs and Mr. Ducker (?) make "an ultimate '90s tape, something that brought a mixshow vibe to alt nation sounds" for Mishka.  Yeah, I grew up on 90's alternative radio, too.  Going to check this out at some point.

  • Free Blood’s John Pugh and Madeline talk to Vulture about useless drum machines. [above]  I'm still loving this band.  Love those t-shirts.

  • "[I'm] like a faggy, lesbian messenger boy that delivers legends and messages for the Gods." - Kim Ann Foxman of Hercules & Love Affair

  • "We've already done a track with Gruff Rhys from the Super Furry Animals, which is great, and one with Beth Ditto from the Gossip. It's looking good so far." -James Ford on the new Simian Mobile Disco album, out as early as the end of this year

    LATE NIGHT TONIGHT

I don't really know what's going on with this besides that First Ave is going to be open and serving until 4 because of the RNC. See you there.

    XXXCHANGE PLAYS PARTIES AND STUFF

Here's some more of that real bloggin shit.

  • One of my current absolute favorite DJ/producers, XXXChange, did a crazy film-themed mix a while ago for Shilo. To balance things out, he just posted a mix of "what I actually do when I deejay at parties and stuff." I'm thrilled to see a Black Ghosts track I still play out regularly, the Kills, and "Alive."

  • Roctakon gets fucked up and makes a mix at home.

  • Fader posts their feature on Little Boots (above), plus her newest promo mix.

  • My buddy Mike the 2600 King has a hot new graphic design/inspiration blog running entitled So Much Pile Up.

  • Here's a sneak preview of CR Blog The Mighty Book of Boosh, based on one of my favorite obessions, The Mighty Boosh on the BBC. You need to know who Old Gregg is.

  • Here's an odd one - Foals' Edwin Congreave talks about his love for Supersoul Recordings and reviews the new 2CD techno compilation licensed to DFA.

  • Beta Blog has a fascinating interview up with Public Enemy bassist Brian Hardgroove. Hardgroove talks about his experiences with China - performing, producing punk bands, Bjork, and politics.

  • "The future is bright, I am about to go into the studio with HervĂ© to work on a project called "Firebeaters" which is mostly going to be fun stuff for DJs and ravers." -Martelo, Santogold's tour DJ

  • Forbes does a video interview with Turntable Labs [sic].

    WANNA BE A BALLER

I'm going to try and present this blog in a more polished manner for a little while. If I like it, I'll keep it up. To start things off, here are some interviews I've saved from the past few days. Maybe this much reading seems boring to some people, but it's my favorite way to get to know artists and, more importantly, improve my own DJing and producing.

  • BlackBook Mag has a chat with A-Trak from his new Williamsburg apartment about producing, running, and Kanye-ing.

  • A-Trak's label Fool's Gold questions French house producer Lifelike, in the first of a series of in-house artist interviews. Here Nick Catchdubs focuses more on Lifelike's production style and technique, which makes for a good read.

  • David Dewaele talks to Dazed Digital about Part of the Weekend Never Dies, the new documentary by Soulwax and Saam Farahmand (see above). I really, really want to see this movie, and I really, really need to get some friends with a huge TV hookup.

  • Earplug talks to Lindstrøm about his new release of epic disco, Where You Go I Go Too (which Pitchfork just designated Best New Music).

  • Resident Advisor kicks off a new series by sitting down with disco-auteur Danny Wang and playing him some records.

  • Winnie Cooper records a chat with Ida No from Glass Candy. He gets her to rap a verse from Lil' Troy's "Wanna Be A Baller."
  •
