JUST LET IT GO

I've got a bunch of online/tech/computer/etc. stuff to talk about. Some of it you may already know, but at one point I didn't, so I'm posting it anyway.

I actually saw someone wearing an iPod shuffle yesterday. It looked pretty ridiculous swinging around their neck, but I couldn't help but be a little jealous.

At first, I thought the idea of the iPod Shuffle was stupid. You can't see what you're listening to, and I'll be damned if I know every song on my iPod. Most of all, I don't like listening to everything on shuffle, let alone letting it shuffle what songs are even ON the device. But as I was expaining the uselessness of it to a friend, I realized that it actually would be really useful. I would never use the shuffle feature, but half the time when I'm listening to my iPod, I'm listening to relatively new playlist of songs I'm digging at the time. The iPod Shuffle would be perfect for this, and it's even tinier than the iPod, and I really like the form factor. I just think that the whole campaign of "life is random" is really a terrible cover-up for "it doesn't have a screen".

Anyways, now I really want one. And I also like getting stuff for free. Help me out on this one. Please sign-up for a free iPod Shuffle by clicking here. I know a few people who have done this. I only need one more referral. All you do is sign up using that link, do the eFax offer (you need a credit card), and then cancel it the next day. It's super easy. Email me if you have questions.

Get Firefox!I made a pretty big change lately. When I redesigned the site, Mozilla and Safari users we're having trouble seeing my site at all. After getting some help, it turned out to be one line of weird CSS. But in the process, I downloaded Mozilla Firefox to test out the site in different browsers. It was a really good idea. I missed the tabbed browsing on Safari like crazy; now going through blogs is ten times easier because of tabs.

It also does a bunch of other crazy things. You can make RSS feed bookmarks. There is a search bar, where you can download plug-ins to search sites like OLGA, AMG, and Amazon. And just a few days ago, I got this amazing little thing called FoxyTunes. You can control iTunes (or any other major media player) from a tiny toolbar on the status bar at the bottom of the screen. Amazing!

I've had these two products from Google for a while now, and they just make so much sense that I don't know what I did without them before. Well, I do know. But I like them. Google Desktop analyzes your computer, and archives it so you search it just like you would using google. It also archives your email and your AIM conversations. It's brilliant. Hooray for big brother.

And if you haven't tried Gmail yet, I highly recommend it. There is now a Gmail Notifier that lets you know when you have new mail in your account. It's like having the Outlook notifier, but all your mail is kept on the web so you can access it from anywhere. I luv it. If you need a Gmail invite, hit me up. I think I have 50 or something.

Don't tell me this isn't techy: I'm really enjoying the new Fischerspooner album, Odyssey. It's not as dark as #1, and I'd say a bit more pop-oriented. Either way, I put it on, and don't really think about it. I just like it. You can watch the video for "Just Let Go" here, as well as download some whacky shit. There's also this crazy Fischerspooner "style guide", which is (as far as I can tell) photos that inspired Casey Spooner during the recording of the album. Weird. Read a review of their cover of the Boredoms' "Vision (Circle Creation New Sun)".

[From One Louder] You can download Kieran Hebden's [Four Tet's] remix of The Kills' "The Good Ones" here. Just give your email address, or a fake one, or whatever.

Lastly, don't comment on this post unless you have something interesting to say. I don't want 20 reasons why Firefox sucks or how you think Google is taking over the world. Here's what you can leave a comment on: what RSS readers do y'all use? I've been using Kinja for a really long time now, but it really isn't so hot. Ideas? I've moved on to Bloglines. Hot.

RSSOwl is what I use for my RSS feeds. I like to be able to use the same programs when I dual boot (Mandrake 10.1/Windows XP), which RSSOwl lets me. What's nice is that it sits in the system tray and goes green when there's new info at any of the feeds you have (you can set it to check for updates in varying intervals (from 1 minute to 24 hours). Nice site and congrats on discovering Firefox. FYI, you can set up your gmail account in Outlook (or Thunderbird, which is recommended [Thunderbird can also be used for RSS feeds, but I have 3 different email adresses and that would just be too much going on]).

am i allowed to comment on how surprised i am to like the new fischerspooner songs? it's so much more user-friendly than the stuff i'd heard until now?

also, the iPod shuffle ad that advises me to "enjoy uncertainty" makes me think "if i were the type to enjoy uncertainty, there are plenty of ways i can do it for free, thanks."
