CRAPPY HIPPIE MUSIC MADE ME SEE THE FUTURE

Broken Social Scene

While watching Broken Social Scene at Intonation this summer, snapping photos, and being overwhelmed by their huge, constantly shifting live sound, the girl next to me turned and spoke into my ear, "Everyone's going to be clapping. Watch."

She caught me off guard, and I had no idea what she was talking about. "What?!" I screamed to her. "Clapping! Everybody's going to start clapping soon, just wait."

The band was in the middle of "Stars and Sons", a track I had taken to skipping when listening to the album, and all of the sudden I remembered what she was talking about. The song's constantly chugging bass line kept going, but at the break in the verse each band member put up their hands and began clapping eighth notes along to the song. As I looked behind me, the entire audience had seemingly done the same thing at the exact same time. At that moment, the sun shining and the people smiling and the bass and drums chugging and everybody clapping, all of it seemed to merge together and make sense. It was like the world clicked into focus for a split second.

If I had to describe the new self-titled Broken Social Scene record in words, I would say that it's like that brief moment of pure lucidity that I experienced turned into an entire album.

can't really get into the new one save for 3-4 songs.

it's not BAD mind you, but i'm not really a big fan of the production on it for one. a lot of the vocals are rather buried.

a lot of the tracks just have too much shit going on for me.

i adore the first 2 full lengths too :-/

oh well, still going to the First Ave gig

I experienced almost an identical situation at the BSS concert at the TLA. It's all about the clapping. When it happens it's almost a climactic moment in the show; the audience, band members, music, and energy in the room all become in sync for a brief moment and it's the best feeling - that's when you know you're at a memorable live experience and everyone in that room has shared it.

Sounds corny and yet its oh so great. Glad you got to have that too.
