I love when the hype machine actually gets behind something good. I mean, there is definitely a such thing as "too much" (i.e. I never want to hear Bloc Party again), but there's always much media to be voraciously picked through and consumed when an artist gets a huge push, and I'm happy when it's someone I like.
In one such instance, I could have cared less about Lady Sovereign (at first). I mean, look at her! She's cheeky! She's SO CHEEKY that it's KILLING YOU! But then I actually heard her. Namely, I heard "Random", which was by far one of the best singles of last year. As luck would have it, the hype machine is behind Lady Sov in full force, and you can cop that track - FOR FREE. Just givin it away. Crazy PR bitchez!
Lady Sovereign - "Random" [mp3]
Most reviews have focused on the haterade lyrics on the track - which are brilliant, mind you. But what hooked me is the hyper hip-hop disco production that makes Lady Sovereign sound like War of the Worlds or some bombastic crap like that. MIA V.Voice writer Nick Sylvester put it best in his Pitchfork review:
"Random" has her best bitchslaps, mostly on American rappers, over kicks and bass zoom we'd expect from Timbo-- in 15 years. In other words, Sov's mean schooling us, flipping our scripts and taunting from afar that she, a 19-year-old London hoodrat, does hip-hop better than hip-hop.
And she was signed by Jay-Z, which is also very rad. Equally rad is the video for that single. It's basically the exact same concept for the "Daft Punk is Playing at My House", except the colored lights are in the studio instead of being people. And it takes place at the "pub" instead of the bar. Plus Sov is more cheeky than J Murphy. WAY more cheeky.

I'm in Chicago for the next seven days. Hit me up if you're around. Later bitchez.
