TRAXX

Some notes on new things I've been hearing:

"Bells" - Vitalic & Linda Lamb - New track from the slightly insane Ukrainian, from the Bells EP 12" out on his own label, Citizen. Same Vitalic sound, but very get-down-to-business attitude. Linda Lamb's vocals really lend themselves to Vitalic's sound, keeping up with the intensity and adding to its spaciness.

"Damage" - Tiefschwarz & Tracy Thorn - I can't find a ton of info on this right now, but I assume it's the next single off of Tiefschwarz's Eat Books, backed by a few remixes. Have only given it cursory listens; not really feeling it. Hearing Thorn I really can't think of anything besides "Missing" from Everything But The Girl, which I am not into.

"Country Girl" - Primal Scream - Of course when I heard Primal Scream's new single had been released, I was off-my-rocker excited. Turned out it was for nothing; the rumors of their return to a more "classic" sound were right, except this time it's incredibly boring. While Bobby Gillespie still gives a decent vocal performance on the track, the rest of it is so incredibly boring, dilluted and generic it makes me sick. The last straw for me was either the terrible video or the mandolin. I really don't like mandolin. Although I could go either way on Bobby's cracked out Tom Petty suit. But bring back the XTRMNTR!

"Long Distance Call" - Phoenix - From the forthcoming album (that gets its name from this song) It's Never Been Like That. Stream it on MySpace. Phoenix have dropped the harder-edged angle of Alphabetical, and kept the lite-new-wave songs. More importantly, they've come out of their somewhat claustrophobic feel from previous records and opened up their sound. I'm not sure how to describe the vibe besides saying "opening up their sound", but that's what it sounds like, and it's incredibly refreshing. It's like they realized, "Hey, this is how we should be recording music." Definitely a great single, and so far the rest of the LP sounds like it's in the same vein. Dig the album art, too (no more pseudo-Crate & Barrel).
