MASS DISTORTIONS

I apologize if I'm a bit incoherent - my apartment is like an oven, and it's very difficult to sleep in an oven.

Over the past few weeks (without an internet connection at home) I've been going through some of my archived mp3s (and my roomate's). Repeat listenings have elevated Primal Scream to one of my favorite bands, in particular the last two albums XTRMNTR and Evil Heat. Their fusion of raw blues rock, Kevin Shields production, and a number of dance styles have got my jaw dropping and my brain wondering whythehell I haven't listened to them sooner (seeing as how I went through that whole dance-punk phase without touching on Primal Scream...).

I started to hope that the PRML SCRM dudes might have a new album or (better yet) some kind of tour in the works. However, if you check out their website - spectacle that it is aside - you'll note that it hasn't been updated in probably a few years. Uh-oh! Now what?

Then I remembered the promo my boys in Rockethouse (ex-Aerial Love Feed) sent me way back in March. Their first official LP (after having an album's worth of demos available for download), Weapons of Mass Distortion, came out March 22 on one of my favorite labes, Kanine. Inundated with new music at the time, I set the CD aside for later listening. Now, finally able to get the Primal Scream references in their press releases (and music), I'm falling for the band all over again. The group's characteristic waves of guitar distortion, huge fusion of electronic/acoustic drum beats, and apocalyptic lyrics are still there. The LP features a newfound sense of clarity and direction, both in the production and arrangements. This adds up to a really great listen ["really great listen?" See what I mean... I need more coffee].

I don't think the band will mind if I post an mp3 to introduce them properly to you. The album's lead off track, "Temporary Glitch", is from the old ALF days, and is a perfect example of their anthemic melodies and hard-hitting, danceable sound. You can order Weapons directly from the label or from Amazon. You can stream more track's at the band's MySpace site.
