A bit about shows for the rest of October in the Twin Cities:
- Wed 10/19/05 - LCD Soundsystem, The Juan Maclean @ First Ave
Go to this concert. There's not much else I can say. Just buy tickets and go. These are the best bands with the best records out today. Don't miss out.
- Sat 10/22/05
- The Warlocks @ 400 Bar
- Metric @ Ascot Room
- The New Pornographers @ First Ave
I may or may not be interviewing the Warlocks, a huge (1 bass, 3 guitars, 2 drum sets, 1 keyboard) stoner rock band from CA, when they come to town. Their latest record on Mute, Surgery, is a fun listen. I don't know what's up Pitchfork's ass that they judge it so seriously. Dig the first track, "Come Save Us", especially.
I got Metric's first album, Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? in the mail when it first came out. After a few months, it really grew on me, and songs like "Hustle Rose" are layered, complex, with strong pop hooks and deep grooves, really hot. I have yet to see them live. Their second album Live It Out just came out, and I'm far less excited about that record, but need to give it some more time. I hope to make it to this show at the Ascot Room at the Quest, but there are a lot of really crappy, annoying people who like Metric, and after seeing a sold out Secret Machines show at the Ascot Room I'm not keen to go back.
The New Pornographers' first album, Mass Romantic, was probably the first album I ever blogged about it. I picked it up when I was in LA for the first time at Amoeba, and it might be one of my top ten records ever. Their second I didn't dig as much, but Twin Cinema, the latest, is amazing so far and gets better with each listen. I've missed this band tons of times because of age restrictions, and it looks like that'll happen yet again. Destroyer, Dan Bejar's (of the NPs) main band is opening, and they'll have Neko Case with them, so it really sucks to miss this.
- Tue 10/25/05 - Devendra Banhart @ Fine Line
Banhart's newest record, Cripple Crow, has a great Sgt. Pepper's-esque album cover, and is really fucking long. It's also really great, and expands his sound beyond his compelling, acoustic-focused arrangements with a few added touches to a much more 60's vibe with a full band. This should be a good show.
