You are a figure associated with vinyl purism and also re-edits, so what do you think of the idea of disco downloads? With nu-disco being driven by digital as well as by vinyl?

I wouldn’t say I was a vinyl purist.  It’s not so much about the format for me, but the quality of the music played, whether this is via turntables, CDJs or laptop.

We can never go back to how things were, nor should we want to - I don’t like nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake, although it’s important to learn from the past if you really want to approach the future from a position of true understanding.

I’m excited about the way things are nowadays, it’s a very open time for music.  People consume music much differently to the way they did when I was younger, but that’s OK as far as I’m concerned.  Things can’t remain static - the moment people start wishing themselves back to the old days is the moment they start to grow old.

It’s not enough to just respect that past, you must also respect the future and the people who are shaping it.

Resident Advisor has an interview up with disco/R&B/pop 80's producer Chaz Jankel. The compilation of his work, My Occupation, that came out a little while ago on Tirk, is amazing.  The singles are backed by remixes from Todd Terje and Hercules & Love Affair, but I think I like the originals better. The album sounds both classic and brand new (and it turns out it's a little of both). Plus the recent interest in his work has led him to start making new stuff. Can't wait.

DIGS: ESCORT

I was first into the idea of Escort after I heard "Starlight" for the first time a few months ago, a very nice piece of real live disco with just enough edge to keep coming back to it. More so, I was into the idea of seeing a live 16-piece, multi-ethnic, full-on-disco collective out of Brooklyn.


But now we have Escort's third single, "A Bright New Life", and holy shit - here we go. Finally, a stand-out single for 2007, easily one of the year's best. Bouncing bass, killer vocal melodies, more female authority than Nelly Furtado's "Maneater" and the best (dare I say, brightest) disco ensemble you're going to hear this decade. You should really check it out. The Morgan Geist re-edit is choice as well.

Now I'm looking forward to the band's fourth single, backed by a remix from the Rapture, after which they're going into hibernation to record their - gasp - album.
